Our buildings shape us first

Text and drawing by Frits Ahlefeldt, DrawnJournalism.com

“We shape our buildings, and afterwards they shape us” is a much quoted 1943 statement from Winston Churchill about how the architecture surrounding us can come to define us, but I wonder if it is more the other way around?

Our buildings shape us, thereafter we shape them

We weren’t born into a void, and then began shaping structures there, we were born into all-ready existing structures, that influence and shapes us from day one. Only much later do we start to create structures, buildings, paths and designs ourselves.
